Matariki – Weave a Matariki star from harakeke / flax

Matariki – Weave a Matariki star from harakeke / flax

Weave a Matariki star from harakeke (NZ flax or paper)

This harakeke whetu /star is lovely to make at Matariki.
Made out of NZ flax, these stars are simple to make,  and can be hung as a mobile, placed on a nature table, a window or Matariki wall display; or scatter on the table around a hakari (feast).

  • Step by step photographic instructions help you to weave a Matariki star
  • Includes a 5 pointed star template, which is useful for measuring the lengths and angles, helping ensure the finished star is more even (though even wonky stars are beautiful too!)
  • As Harakeke is a firmer material to work with, young children could also make with paper strips which fold and hold easier, which could then be glued to a background to display.
  • Supplied as an A4 digital file to download and print
  • Buy once, use forever! Making it a great ritual or project to make each Matariki, or Christmas.

Be sure to learn about safe harvesting and tikanga including karakia for Harakeke.
I encourage you to check out our ‘Harakeke Weaving for Kids Resource’, for info on how to work with, harvest, prepare, and dye harakeke.
(This star, plus more, is also included in this resource).
