ANZAC Biscuit recipe for kids
DID YOU KNOW:
During World War I, wives and mothers wanted to send something nutritious to the soldiers, because they were worried the troops weren’t getting that well fed. They made biscuits that became known as ‘Red Cross biscuits’ or ‘soldiers biscuits’.
As well as being sent to soldiers and nurses in the war, the biscuits were baked for fundraisers for the war effort.
These biscuits became known as Anzac biscuits sometime after the formation of the ‘Australian and New Zealand Army Corps’ (ANZAC) in 1914.

ANZAC Biscuit recipe for kids
Ingredients –
+ 1 cup plain flour
+ 1 cup rolled oats
+ 1 cup desiccated coconut
+ 3/4 cup white sugar
+ 150g butter
+ 4 tbsp golden syrup
+ 1 tsp baking soda
Method –
- Preheat the oven to 180˚C (160°C fan forced)
- Line 2 baking trays with baking paper.
- DRY MIX: Mix flour, oats, coconut and sugar in a bowl.
- WET MIX: Melt butter and golden syrup in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until butter has melted.
- Stir in baking soda. Note it will fizz up, this is normal. Immediately remove from heat.
- Pour wet mix into dry mix, stirring until just combined. The mixture should be crumbly, but will stick when pressed together.
- Roll 1 tablespoon of the mixture into balls.
- Place balls, 5cm apart, on prepared trays, then use the back of a fork to flatten into patties.
- Bake for approx 15 minutes, or until deep golden.
Bake for 12 minutes if you prefer chewy biscuits. - Cool on trays for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool. Biscuits will harden as they cool.
Store in a tin.
Ways to teach kids about ANZAC Day
- Make biscuits – As you make biscuits, discuss why they were made. Did you know they were sent to soldiers overseas? Did you know they were used to raise funds for the war? Did you know food was rationed during the war and they had to make biscuits from what was available? That’s why eggs were substituted from golden syrup in the recipe. Can you imagine having limited food?
- Make or plant ANZAC Poppies – Craft from paper or card, or sow some seeds.
- Read ANZAC stories or short history – better yet, make a cuppa and read with an ANZAC bikkie.
- ANZAC Word search – Learn about some of the words associated with ANZAC with a word search activity.
- Crafts for ANZAC Day – Create art, make a poppy, make a cardboard tube bugle and learn The Last Post, or make an ANZAC wreath.
