A Five Senses Nature Walk for kids

A Five Senses Nature Walk for kids

A Five Senses Nature Walk

A Five Senses Nature Walk is a simple outdoor activity where children explore a local nature space such as a park, garden, or forest; and are are invited to see, touch, hear, smell, and safely taste the world around them.

It is a lovely nature activity suitable for kids and nature lovers, perfect for classroom breaks, forest school outings, or family walks – simply allowing us to be present in nature through using all of our senses.

INSTRUCTIONS:
How to explore nature through each sense

Sight:

  • Look for the colors of the rainbow in leaves, flowers, and sky, or use a magnifying glass to inspect tree bark and tiny bugs.

Touch:

  • Collect items with different textures like rough rocks, velvety flower petals, or smooth pebbles. Try a “Get to Know a Tree” game by gently feeling a tree’s bark with your eyes closed.

Sound:

  • Stand completely still for one minute with your eyes closed and count how many different bird chirps, wind rustles, or crunching leaves you hear.

Smell:

  • Crush fallen leaves or flower petals between your fingers and describe the scent (earthy, sweet, or sharp).

Taste:

  • Bring along a fresh fruit snack like a slice of watermelon or strawberries to enjoy a healthy treat right in the middle of nature.
If you know your flowers or herbs you could teach some safe foraging. It is important to share with kids the safety ALWAYS ask an adult before eating anything in nature: some things are poisonous.
