Winter warmer recipe: Golden Milk

Winter warmer recipe: Golden Milk

Golden milk recipe:

This yummy sweet spiced drink has become a firm favorite already this winter.

Combining the wintery warmth of cinnamon, the spicy hint of ginger and pepper, and tumeric to help relieve symptoms of inflammation, this hot drink feels nourishing, warming and delicious.
Bonus is that it is simple to make from staple pantry spices and is perfect for cool mornings or chilly winter nights instead of a hot choccy drink.
The maple syrup is just the right amount of sweet, though can be substituted with your syrup of choice.

If you like spiced chai, you’ll enjoy Golden Milk!

Golden Milk recipe

Makes 1 cup

Ingredients

  • 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon tumeric
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Hot water + milk  –OR-  3/4 cup milk, warmed + foamy
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon coconut oil

Method

  1. Add maple syrup to a large mug
  2. Add spices and mix into a runny paste
  3. A heated water and / or milk
  4. Enjoy! (That was easy aye?)

Things to note:

Turmeric is widely known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Its active compound, curcumin, blocks inflammatory molecules in the body and has been studied for its ability to relieve symptoms of inflammatory conditions like arthritis, colitis, and joint disorders.

  • Making tumeric bioavailable:
The inflamatory property in tumeric, curcumin, is difficult for your body to absorb on its own.
Consuming it with fat (like olive oil or coconut milk) or black pepper can increase its absorption.
  • Using quality spices:
The amount of curcumin in culinary turmeric is relatively low (usually 2% to 6%).
For managing chronic inflammation, studies are usually based on highly concentrated curcumin extracts or supplements rather than just the spice.
  • Potential Side Effects:
Generally considered safe, though note that high doses of turmeric or curcumin supplements can cause digestive upset and may interact with blood-thinning medications, so don’t go crazy with (even though it’s yum!)
