Luffa Gourd, also known as vegetable sponge, are tropical vines in the cucumber family. Commonly harvested for its dry sponge.
The young fruit, also known in asia as Okra, are also edible.
Luffa fruit will produce a better shape if the plant is grown up a frame.

  • SOWING TIME:
    Later Winter / Early Spring.
    As Luffa require a long growing season of around 6 months, it is wise to establish seeds early and plant young plants after the last frost.
  • HARVEST TIME:
    Harvest young fruit (Okra) for eating throughout the growing season.
    Harvest dry sponges in Late Summer – Autumn; approx Feb – April when skin yellows or begins to brown.
  • CLIMATE:
    Luffa require warmer temperatures for germination and growth. Grow through the summer months, in a sunny site with compost rich soil.

  • USES:
    The young dark green fruit of the Luffa Gourd are are known as Okra and are considered an Asian delicacy. Use young fruits in stirfry’s and salads as you would zuchinni. When luffa are grown to maturity (about 2 months) they become a fibrous sponge, harvest and dry for bathroom use.
